So far so good here at the National Campus/Community Radio Conference on Gabriola Island. The hosts CKGI have done a great job making people feel welcome. There are people many people who have come from as far as Halifax, Toronto and more. It is great to see people enjoy our beautiful province for their first time.

In the morning we had a panel discussion entitled Radio New Media. This panel was made up of members from CBC Radio English, CBC Radio Three, Industry Canada and the National Campus and Community Radio Association. The representative from CBC Radio Three noted that their strategy is to “raise awareness for Canadian music.” They do this by allowing listeners to shape their own listening experience. Listeners can either listen to the regular broadcast or podcast with a host guiding the listener through what they feel is the best; or the listeners can create playlists on the website and check out music as they want. In the afternoon there were two panel discussions. One was “Advocacy, Activism and Balanced Journalism” in the and the other was called “Music Director Panel - Moving To Digital.” Each were full of distinguished members who are opinion leaders on the subject matter. In the “Balanced Journalism” panel there were Elizabeth May (Green Party), Kathryn Molloy (NGO), Chris Straw (CBC Radio), Paul Manly (documentary film producer), and Frieda Werden (CJSF/Groundwire). It was an interesting panel that was easily summed up by Elizabeth May who commented that “we desperately need a deep understanding of issues” and that “everyone is entitled to the own opinion, but not entitled to their own facts.”

Then the evening finished off with a special treat. Carolyn Mark of Mint Records (Vancouver) played a set to a small crowd of enthusiastic fans.
