CIVL in Abbotsford News on International Women’s Day

March 8th, 2011 by aaron

CIVL Radio is excited to be recognized in today’s Abbotsford News, dubbed by Neil Corbett as the Cultural Diversity Awards ‘big local winner’, and appreciates all of the support this community has given to CIVL Radio and its partners in diversity.

Special recognition needs to go out to Cultural Diversity Awards keynote speaker Nehal Azab, whose photo graces the pages of the news this week, on an especially important occasion, today being the 100th anniversary of International Womens Day.

Nehal described a powerful and evocative series of events in her keynote address at the Cultural Diversity Awards, recounting the visit she took back to her native Egypt, where she was in Cairo during the January protests that led to the impending regime change from President Hosni Mubarak.

It is the strength of storytelling like this that helps to keep local efforts alive, striving for open and more inclusive democratic practices at home and abroad, and it is storytellers like Nehal Azab who ensure that our community will continue to diversify and recognize the richness and vitality of the culture within.

Please continue to share stories of strong women in your community, and support their efforts.

March 7th, 2011 by aaron

This week the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses of UFV are going to play host to a pair of engaging events that you won’t want to miss.

The first is two pronged, and an essential forum for all UFV students to attend:

Candidates for all eligible seats on SUS student representative board for the upcoming school year will be stating their positions, and taking your questions at the following places and times:

• Abbotsford 12:30 to 2:30 p.m, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 ( B133 )
• Chilliwack 12:30 to 2:30 p.m, Thursday, March 10, 2011 ( A201 )

The second event takes place at Caseys on Campus this Thursday, March 10th at 11am, and is focused on the development and the future of the land surrounding the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.

Food, prizes, drinks, and discussion will be provided, and you are invited to give your input towards how to create a ‘vibrant and sustainable region near a university that connects people with amenities‘.

February 28th, 2011 by aaron

CIVL Radio 101.7 FM is proud to be nominated for two Cultural Diversity Awards from Abbotsford Community Services, in the categories of Marketing/Outreach and Inclusive Environment.

The ceremony takes place this coming Friday, March 4th, so wish CIVL luck in being recognized for providing a safe, accessible space where community members and students can work together to develop new skills, network, apply their strengths, and share ideas and information freely and effectively.

With the Oscar’s just gone by, we all know the mantra: just being nominated is an honour of it’s own, but in the realm of community service and diversity — doubly so.

Do you want to get involved!?
