January 10, 2008-Break Up Songs:The Good, The Bad and the Dear John

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Hey Guys, sorry it’s been a while but I’m back and I’ll have two shows updated on here. Also don’t forget that tomorrow is another great show. This week: “It Lead to Led: Led Zeppelin Behind the Music”

So the january 10th show was all about break up songs.

starts off with two songs about things that happen after relationships ie. nostalga and arguements about who gets what!

1. Grace Potter and the Nocturnal’s- Toothbrush and My Table

2. The Barenaked Ladies- The Old Apartment

The next few are the sad ones. they i got dumped and i feel like total shit. the songs you listen to and eat a tub of ben and jerry’s(girls) or get hammered and get into barfights(guys) or hey, either one.

3. Joni Mitchell-River (p.s. bonus sad points for this being a break up at Christmas song…oh Joni, you have been hurt…who hurt you? who hurt you?)

4.The Dire Straights-Romeo and Juliet

5. The Travelling Wilbury’s-Congratulations

6. The White Stripes-You’ve Got Her in Your Pocket (heartbreaker line: “You search in your mind for something clever to say…don’t go away” what a perfect way to capture that helpless feeling when you are trying to make her9or him) stay but just cant find the words…ouch, again)

These songs about being broken up with, but a break up that gives you strength

7. Colin James-Why’d You Lie

8. Fleetwood Mac-The Chain

9. Billy Talent-The Ex

10. Johnny Cash-Hurt (you might not think of break ups when you hear this song, and i dont think Cash intended that feeling, but trent reznor, its writer sure did. I would have played the NIN version but, man it kinda blows, especially when you have Johnny cashs truly killer version)

11. Flight of the Conchords-I’m Not Crying

Ok, here’s the empowering songs that involve you doing the breaking up! the first bunch are all kinda angry break ups or empowering break ups.

12.  Solomon Burke- Get Out Ma’ Life Woman

13. Alanis Morrisette-You Oughta know (oh yes, we went there. p.s. did you know: the band for this song consists of Flea on bass, Dave Navvaro on guitar and Taylor Hawkin on Drums (Foo Fighters))

14. Over-The Birthday Massacre

15. Cake- I Will Survive

16. The Who- I Can See for Miles

17. Marvin Gaye- I Heard It Through the Grape Vine

18. The Beatles- If I Needed Someone (the ultimate i’ll call you, don’t call me) (also think Yesterday and many more from the beatles)

19. Bob Dylan-Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.

20. The Racontuers- Top Yourself (also off the same album…many shades of black)

21. Death from Above 1979- You’re Lovely (But You’ve Got Problems)

22. Hot Hot Heat-Goodnight, Goodnight

23. The Guess Who-No Time

24. Led Zeppelin-That’s the Way (also bae I’m Gonna leave you and about a million other by zep)

25. The Eagles-Already Gone

26. Janis Joplin-Bye, Bye Baby

27. The Rolling Stones-The Last Time

so that wraps up our show, but as i have already mentioned there are tons of other break up songs out there, pick your favourite…

…tell us yours here!

January 03, 2009-Lookin’ Back at 2008:A Year in Review

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

hey guys, hope you all enjoyed this weeks show, and if you haven’t heard it yet, then you should grab the podcast quick, it was a gem!

This weeks theme was looking back at the last year of music. first thing i have to say is that, in doing this show, i have realized how lucky we are to be alive right now in this thrilling time for music. There is lots of great new music, as well as new classics from old favourites. All this combined with the ability to get your hands on any of the already fantastic music from past decades and you have one hell of a bank to fill an iPod with, or make a cd library or a record collection or…well you get the point.

this brings me to the second note: there was a lot to get to for this show and inevitably we couldn’t play everything. so in lieu of another mammoth three hour show, i’m going to post link on here to some of the music we didn’t get to play tonight.

enjoy.

1. Led Zeppelin-Good Time, Bad Times

(we played this classic in honour of some of the great reunion shows and tours that were un leashed on the world in 08 ( and late 07). The Police, Van Halen and of course Led Zeppelin. This song is what they opened their concert with and it is very fitting since it opens with the line “In the days of my youth i was told what it meant to be a man, now I’ve reached that age i try to do it the best i can”. Almost as if the song was written just for that show!)

2. AC/DC-Stormy may day

3. Guns and Roses-Scraped

4. Radiohead- Bodysnatchers

(a killer tune, however, not released in 08, this album still made a huge splash in the past year, not tomention the fact that radio practically owned the festival scene this last summer. practically…)

5. Weezer-Troublemaker

6. Beck-Gamma ray

7. The Offspring-You’re Gonna Go far, Kid

8. The Trews-Hold me in your Arms

9. The Trews- Burning Wheels

10. Sam Roberts-Love at the End of the World

11. Crystal Castles-xxzxcuzx me

12. Crystal Castle- Crimewave

13. LCD Soundsystem-Big Idea

14. MGMT-Electric Feel (probably the biggest buzz bad of 08, the artic monkeys for this year)

15. MIA- Paper Planes ( i know, i know , not technically from 08 but what song was played more this year? pineapple express launched this song into the mega hit realm. lets face it..it deserves it an excellent use of the riff from the clash’s “straight to hell”, killer beats, wicked rhymes and hook that can’t be beat. And that wicked use of the firing gun had every wigga out there practicing their ghetto posturing…not even in a way that was that lame either…)

16. My Morning Jacket-Aluminum Park

17. the Virgins- rich girls

18. Death Cab for Cutie- Cath…

19. Kinds of Leon- Sex on Fire

20. The Racounteurs-Consoler of the Lonely

21. The Black keys- Remember When (side B)

22. White Denim- I can tell

23. white Denim- All You Really Have to Do

24. Coldplay- Cemeteries of London

25. Michael Franti and SpearHead- Life in the City

26.  Cat Power- I Believe in You (Bob Dylan Cover)

27.  Jack Johnson- Same Girl

28. Marc Broussard-Must be the Water

29. Laura Izibor- Shine (Live at the crawdadddy)

30. John Mayer Trio- Bold as Love (live cover of Jimi hendrix)

That wraps up what we played on the show. Now as for awesome songs/bands from 2008 I think you need to lend an ear to the following bands:

Metallica was another band that put out a big comeback, i not a giant metallica fan, but if you  even have a hint of metalhead in you, you’ll eat this up here’s Metallica “The Day That never Comes”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yErdJpg1ECg

typical metallica, but if you like them youll love this, very master of puppets era of them.

two oldies that put out great new songs:

john mellencamp-troubled land:

jackson Browne-Time the conquerer:

the monotonix, a crazy band from israel, we saw this very show, it got shut down in 13 minutes flat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmEHu-QAgNE&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl2lT1aJQgo

in the down home section we have mudcrunch, tom petty’s old band) who put out their first ever LP, here with “Lover of the bayou”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln7F-a05aQI

and old crow medicine show with “alabama high test” which is more or less a banjo-fied version of subterranian homesick blues with differentish lyrics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh2BFj4_kgM

stephen malkmus and jicks busted out a solid effort this year with a bonafide indie supergroup, fielding members of pavement and sleater-kinney.

here’s “Dragonfly Pie”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1uEjaL6blE

The hits were a great breakout from mission BC, theyre always here: check them out! this is called “wind me up” This is them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EBbhNqGeyE&feature=related

dont forget another great bc band: the pack AD this is anither show that we were at, i shared my JD with Maya (the drummer)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FhDVLglUTs

final bands, and two more that were discovered via concert:

Catching Up…

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Hey guys, the past two weeks have been hectic and i have had little time to write out the playlists for the EC.

they were both pretty random shows though, the first was the christmas show, with a bunch of rock and roll Christmas tunes and last week was a “hangover special” basically us just throwing on a bunch of music because we din’t really have much of a theme.

so if you were or are listening to the show and were or are wondering what a song was or have any comments, just give us a shout here and i’ll fill you in.

Peace

“Music is Love”
