EPISODE 9 // ???

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

What be happening. This week my tracklisting is lost in the ether. I played tracks from Apollo Ghosts, Faux Amis and a particularly warming track from Rose Melberg:

“but the best i can do is dream of you
if only sleep would come then I could
hold you near until you disappear
in the morning light
at least you were mine for the night”

Rose Melberg - Each New Day

Other than that. Don’t remember. I don’t believe is particularly great. Next Week is top notch though. New AC Newman, Young & Sexy, Aidan Knight. You know it.

EPISODE 7 // Goodbye Balearic.

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

First Show of the New Year. We begin the new season by saying goodbye to the bringer of many good things Bruce Mans, curator of the New Balearic. Holiday wind brought him back home, and has now taken him away, but not before we could sneak him into CIVL Radio’s studios for 2 Pop Music From Around Here episodes. This time I made him stick to the “Around Here” theme, and he did so, but with a classic New Balearic flare. It’s Ambient Pop Music From Around Here. We also feature Rae Spoon, The Weathered Pines, snowy tracks tracks from Fleet Foxes and Pan Pan, big tracks from Sunny Day Real Estate and Jeremy Enigk and a cold Canadian Dream from Sam Roberts. It’s all there and more. With the aforementioned Bruce Mans, joined midway by Reuben Moes & Cassandra Barradas, and finished under the keen observational eye of Eric Atsma.

EPISODE 6 // Courtesy of South Korea, The New Balearic

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Bruce Mans is a good good good friend. I just hadn’t seen him for a year and a half. He curates The New Balearic, an eclectic monthly podcast that features a good range of tracks and is truly the pipeline of excellent music for myself and nearly all my pals. If you haven’t yet, go listen…even before you listen here. Bruce gives us a modified top 10 of 2008…Not of around here, but sticking to the accepted motif of Pop Music From Around Here…Not too much electronic work, not too heavy…essentially the greek doctrine of “Nothing in Excess”…Not that Mr. Man usually does excess. But…Whatever.

As well, I, Reuben Moes(Friend Friend Friend), and Beth Mans(Friend Friend Friend) give our top tracks of 2008. Yup Yup Yup.

Little Joy – The Next Time Around

The Dodos – Fools

Vampire Weekend – Kids Don’t Stand A Chance

EPISODE 5 // David Jules. Rules.

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

David Jules Rules. I live with David Jules Vandergugten. He is something like 6 feet and 4 inches. Probably taller. Construction labourer strong, but kind as a lamb and a giver of great hugs. Also a connoseur of local pop and folk. Fun 100, the WCB and the B-Lines don’t get played often on Pop Music From Around Here. I’d say they are decidely pop in their punk flavourings, but my feeble mind usually can only handle the sweetest melodic pop. Dave can handle more, and is able to send it over the radio/internet waves to your ears. Today. It’s Pop Music From Around Here, with Nathan Moes and David Vandergugten.

The Pink Mountaintops – Can You Do That Dance?

The Dudes – Don’t Talk

They Shoot Horses Don’t They? The Farthest Reaching

Jordan Klassen – Ask Me Not Astronaut

Stories of Oceans – Streetlamps and Passing Headlights

Andy Shauf The Darker Night

Karl Blau- Into the Nada

Lake -  Oh The Places we’ll Go

Graves - Drop Some Teenage Names

Graves - I’m Feeling Tuff

Fun 100 - Computer

WCB - Hockeysaurus

The B-Lines - Busy Man

US US US - Fictitious Delicious
