CIVLCAST 5 // UFV WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY

Friday, November 28th, 2008

For our 5th CIVLCast episode we feature a recording of several talks that were a part of UFV World Philosophy Day. The forum, which took place at the Abbotsford campus of the University of the Fraser Valley on November 20th 2008th,  hosted His Eminence Archbishop Lazar of the Orthodox Church, Glen Baier, and Peter Raabe discussing “The Just Society.”

This coming weekend leaves no shortage of activies, a reality that I, having just finished my 3rd last paper am particularly excited about.

Tonight, Friday November 28th, Josh Hyslop, Waking Jude, Chris Blair, Catherine Newton, & The Franklyn Currie Band descend upon the Bull & Raven in Abbotsford. 9PM Start.

Josh Garrels, Hip Hop Folk hybrid songwriter plays at TWU  on both Friday and Saturday as part of their annual Spirit of Christmas. He’s the real deal. What a voice. What rhythm.

Adrian Orange makes his way into Vancouver along with New Golden Spirituals on November 30th. Yes. Surely that is a cause for Thanksgiving.

OK. There are more. Including a sweet show at the Sweatshop with Bend Sinister and Elizabeth tonight, but I ain’t going to do all the work for you.

Head to LiveMusicVancouver to do your own work.

JOY DIVISION? JAY DIVISION

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

“I don’t like to let songs sit in my head for too long. So I record them and sometimes I end up hogging all the tracks. Do this four times in a row and you’ve got yourself a solo EP.” - Jay Arner (International Falls, Fine Mist, Poison Dart)

Yes, and that solo EP is Jay Division, a collection of synth filled tracks headed up, in my opinion by the super “Undiscovered Sun.” This EP, with its nod to the 1970’s group Joy Division is but one of the many products of Arner this past year. 2008 has seen the hands of Mr. Arner on various efforts including the work of The Magician, Tailor Island, and Ryland Bouchard.

Alongside this workin celebration for an International Falls cross-Canada tour this past summer, he churned out a Remix album combining samples from his work with International Falls and Poison Dart with the superb lyrical work of hip hop notables Young Jeezy, R. Kelly and Clipse. And to great success.

Then, he started a new band. Fine Mist. Then he moved from Langley to Vancouver. Then he started eating more sprouts than lettuce.

GOSSIP IN THE GRAIN

GOSSIP IN THE GRAIN
Ray Lamontagne and Leona Naess at the Vogue Theatre, Friday November 8th, 2006

Ray Lamontagne had the most attentive audience in Vancouver Friday night at his Sold out show at the vogue theater. He opened the set up with a soulful sixty’s reminiscent number, “You are the Best thing”,from his latest Album Gossip in the Grain. The band played several somber track’s including “Hold you in my arms”, “Let it be me”, and “Trouble,” all songs being ones that most of the people in The Vogue came to hear.
Ray was joined by a four piece band a Guitarist/Slide man, Drummer, Keyboardist and a bass player.

Not known for being a “People Person” Ray came across as super shy as far as interaction goes the audience, but when he starts into the next song all the “I love you Ray!” and “WOO’s” stop…and you could here a pin drop.

Leona Naess, who was the amazing well matched opener for the show, sang haunting backing vocals on the tracks, “I still care for you”, and “A Falling Through”.

Set list:
You are the Best Thing
Hold You in My Arms
Empty
I Still Care For You
Let It Be Me
Henry Nearly Killed Me (It’s a Shame)
Old Roses
Meg White
Burn
Winter Birds
Sarah
Hey Mama
You Can Bring Me Flowers
A Falling Through
Trouble
Encore 1
Shelter
Three More Days
Encore 2
All The Wild Horses
Jolene

My track selection from the show is the song, “Empty”, from the album
Till the Sun Turn’s Black. Recorded for BBC 4 Sessions recorded in London at St. Lukes Cathedral back on April 13th, 2007. Find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIUSikXex5w

NEARLY FAMOUS MUSIC FESTIVAL // CHILLIWACK ALL CANDIDATES FORUM

Friday, November 14th, 2008

How this passed under my radar, I have little clue. Except perhaps that its not really famous. Aspiring to such grand East-Coast events such as NXNE, Pop Montreal, Halifax Pop Explosion, the 2008 NFMF hosts Nat Jay, The Parlour Steps, Streetlight, Hawaiian Bibles, Big Jon Bates, SNFU, Fur Bearing Animals, Defektors, The Painted Birds, The Dead Cats and way way more.

Comparable to our Eastern Counterparts? Errr…A good beginning.

It’s this weekend. November 13-16, 2008 at various downtown venues. For a complete schedule -> Nearly Famous Music Festival.

As well, the Chilliwack Municipal Election All-Candidates Forum is available for simple download and podcasting.

CIVL RADIO PROGRAM BLOGGGS

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

As an online radio station that gets a lot of its listenership from after-live-broadcast downloads and podcasts, it is important to present our content in accessible and appealing form. Thus, we are very excited to present another new frontier for CIVL Programming. Radio Show Blogs.

WHAT IS BLOGGING?

Thanks Wikipedia.

WHY HAVE BLOGS FOR CIVL RADIO SHOWS?

Having a show description as well as a track listing for each episode provides discerning listeners with a clear understanding of what they are going to be hearing in each hour.

Providing links to artist’s websites, or the record label that distributes their work is also helpful for listeners who might like to hear more from the artist or group, or explore similar musical territory on record label websites.

As well, by providing a track listing , you can easily notify groups or solo artists when you have featured them on their show, a reality they can very easily verify through your track listing.

However, you can do much more than simply what has been described. If you found a video of particular interest that relates to your show…put it on your blog. An article that you would never bother dream of reading aloud during your show? Place a link to it on your blog. An interview that you did but had to shorten when you aired it live? Dump the whole thing on your blog.

Blogging provides for a more complete experience for the listener. He or she is able to listen to your show, explore in greater depth your musical content by following links online, as well as read and watch things that are difficult to broadcast through an ear only media like Radio.

WHAT DOES A BLOG LOOK LIKE?

If you click here (Or over there ->), you will be brought to the new blog of Pop Music Of Around Here (That’s my show). I provide it as an example of what content one might put on your blog. Of course, there are many other examples. A favorite of mine is The New Balearic. Good style, even better music, a melodically discerning UFV grad as well! Also check out: Scissorkick, Gorilla vs. Bear, or Fluxblog. Follow your mouse, there are many other examples.

BEGIN BLOGGING!

To begin blogging for your show, go to CIVL.ca and click the ‘DJ Blogs‘ link on the far right of the black bar with all main links. You will arrive at the blog home for our main CIVL Blog. On the right hand side near the bottom of the sidebar, under the link of “Meta” is the link “New Blog.” Click here and you will be guided on your way to creating a username, a blog name, and writing your first blog! Bon appetit.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BEDROOM . . . GETS PUBLISHED ONLINE

Friday, November 7th, 2008

4 songs, 3 patch cords, 2 persons and a handkerchief…And a guitar, 2 capos, 1 omnichord, 1 accordian, 1 trumpet, 1 pair of scissors, several drumsticks, 2, jars, 1 filled, the other empty…et al.

Aidan Knight and Julia Wakal set out to make an EP in a week and Awktober emerged. clacking percussion that demands headphones, muted horns, soft guitars, 2 voices and an particularly pleasant omnichord combine to create dreamy bedroom pop.

And yet this was not the only new offering from Mr. Knight during the month of October. While he has yet to release any work in hardcopy form to his long-suffering fans, the leaf-changing season saw him also release a 5 song EP entitled Hi There in online format, complete with liner notes and album photos. It is a welcome format as opposed to scattered tracks found in various myspace and facebook portals.  Here’s to Victoria Pop!
