Abbotsford, BC - CIVL Radio, the campus and community radio station of the University of the Fraser Valley, has recently filed an application to the CRTC to change their allotted frequency to 101.7FM and to move their tower location to near the Mount Lehman Road highway exit. From now until May 4, 2010 the CRTC is seeking public consultation from community organizations in Abbotsford, Mission, Aldergrove and Langley.

CIVL Radio Society President Dustin Ellis noted that “CIVL Radio has a mission to support the local community anyway that we can. CIVL Radio does this by promoting local events and by playing public service announcements.” Ellis also pointed out that “CIVL Radio is a non-profit society and these services are provided free-of-charge as long as the message is for the benefit of the community.”

Community organizations can submit their comments online at the CRTC website, by mail or by fax. To find the CIVL Radio application, Google “CRTC 2010-192″ and click on the section called the “UCFV Campus and Community Radio Society.” During the consultation process, the CRTC will need to know why the organization supports CIVL Radio with details to support their position.

Ellis remarked that “CIVL Radio cannot wait to broadcast on the FM dial, but until then one can listen to CIVL Radio online or one can add any of our programs as a podcast. Check it out at www.civl.ca today.”

To help CIVL Radio help the community with promotional support, send an email to psa@civl.ca with the details or phone 604 851 6306.

Hey there folk!

You know that when it is the season of giving, it is also the season of cold and bleak weather. The 5 and 2 Ministries are looking for your help in assisting those who live out in the elements during this cold and bleak time of year.

The plan is to collect gift cards and other financial donations from now until December 29th, 2009. These will in turn purchase items that the homeless can use to survive. As posted in their facebook event details, the following is a list of retailers the 5 and 2 Ministries need gift cards from and the items they will purchase for the homeless:

“The Real Canadian Superstore: food and clothing
Wal Mart: food, operational needs and clothing
Costco: food, dinner supplies and clothing
Little Caesars: community dinners
Starbucks: coffee for street outreach
Gas Stations Fuel Cards: transportation needs to facilitate goods and service distribution
Tim Hortons: coffee for street outreach
Zellers: food, operational needs and clothing
Canadian Tire: homeless supplies candles tarps, and similar items
Save On Foods: food supplies
PriceSmart: food supplies
Safeway: food supplies

We are also accepting Canadian Tire money an item we have been accepting for years which helps us meet the needs of our community. Additionally individuals wishing to contribute financially please make cheques payable to Freshwind and write The 5 and 2 in the memo line. If you can think of any other cards that may be useful let us know.

Be CIVL! Cultivate community!

CIVL Approves A New Program!

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

SHE IS STEAM POWERED
Lindsday Edwards - Tuesdays 4PM to 5PM

“She Is Steam Powered will present a mix of genres including altpop, cuddlecore, indie-folk and electroclash. On a weekly basis, Lindsay will present a special musical theme with music that represents the tastes of UFV’s student body. This will include some of latest and greatest of Canadian artists.”  Check out her blog by clicking here.

Also, this new addition also means a shift in our programming a slight bit. Host Dan Mack and his program “Just Noise” will move to an earlier slot on the same date. Dan Mack is a graduate of the UFV History/Geography program and is currently gaining more prerequisites for an education degree.

JUST NOISE
Dan Mack - Tuesdays 1PM to 2PM

“Host Dan Mack wants to convince you that punk rock in your backyard isn’t dead.  JUST NOISE will feature genres such as punk, ska, hardcore and related sub-genres. A typical set-list could include bands such as Blue Monday, Revenge, Snapcase, The Real MacKenzies, SNFU, DOA, Against All Authority, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Heatskores and Los Furios. Dan Mack also has a mandate to promote local shows and events related to these genres so expect the plenty of, but not exclusively, Canadian content.”
