Devon Falls: City Council Honours Late You Say Party! Drummer

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Devon Clifford is a name that needs no introduction in the Fraser Valley.

As the drummer for local Abbotsford musical heroes, and internationally recognized dance-punk icons You Say Party! We Say Die!, Devon helped define and build upon an already vibrant, independent, largely underground, and undeniably determined music scene in Abbotsford, and the Fraser Valley, representing British Columbians to regions on both sides of the Atlantic.

He was also a beloved and dedicated member of his communities, through athletics, his time spent around the music scene both in Abbotsford and Vancouver, as well as working to provide support for marginalized individuals in personal and institutional settings.

Devon died well before his time this year, barely over the age of 30, and now he is being paid a beautiful tribute by the city he gave so much to.

The Abbotsford Times reports that city council agreed Monday night to name a waterfall in Bassani Park, by Highland Estates from McKee Road, “Devon Falls”.

According to a letter from Devon’s parents, Edna and Ronald (found HERE and provided for your perusal by Aird Flavelle via city council), Devon often sought solace and safety in the falls at Bassani Park, and they feel is a wonderful tribute to his life.

It is a fitting homecoming for the current line up of the renamed You Say Party!, who have just returned from touring Europe, having been nominated for and won a number of Canadian awards since their latest album XXXX, including top honours for Rock Recording at the recent Western Canadian Music Awards, as well as being nominated to the long list of the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, honouring the 40 best albums in Canada for the year.
