CIVLCast 18// Interview w/ Tombstone Brawlers

Monday, September 28th, 2009

The Tombstone Brawlers, NY/NJ’s premier psychobilly outfit, has been kicking ass and taking names since the mid 90s. With influences such as Johnny Burnette, Link Wray, and the Stiff Little Fingers, the Brawlers are not your average bar band. They’ve toured Europe with the Caravans, co-headlined The American Nightmare Festival in L.A. with the Phantom Rockers.

Their debut album, “Scary Movies,” proved that the Brawlers are definitely a force to be reckoned with. The band’s second full length album, “Meathook Lover,” is scheduled for release in late Summer 2006. Also be on the lookout for “God Save the King,” a psychobilly tribute to Elvis, on which The Tombstone Brawlers will perform “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” featuring Nigel Lewis on vocals.

The ferociousness of a live Brawlers performance is worth its weight in bricks. The Tombstone Brawlers are bringing the guts and the grit back to a music scene where punk has become safe and underground has become mainstream. You’ll sweat, you’ll swear, you’ll love them or you’ll hate them, but, at the end of the night you definitely won’t forget them.
[From the band's online bio]

Psycho Radio host Amos Evans spoke to Lord Zacher on the phone to discuss upcoming plans, the state of psychobilly on the east coast of the U.S. and the finer points of living in rural New Jersey.

CiVL Pinheads Win the 1st Annual Punk Bowlers Ball!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

CiVL came out to support the 2009 Punk Bowlers Ball at Rev’s Lanes in Burnaby B.C., on August 28 to help support the cause of Punk Rock Bowling in Vancouver. Assembling a rag-tag team consisting of Adam Nathe of Mostly Punk and Blues, Amos Evans of Psycho Radio, Dustin Ellis of The Freaky Freaky Show and Larry Portelance of The CanCon Container Ship, the CiVL Pinheads turned out to be the Cinderella story of the tournament. Aided by a handicap system that allowed these mostly novice bowlers to compete against the much more experienced teams, the Pinheads scrambled into the top 16 in 15th place, slid into the top 8 in 6th place, squeaked into the top 4 in 4th and bowled their best game in the semi-finals, entering the final match seeded #1. Coming up against the heavily-favored Legendary Lane Smashers, and with a 140-pin handicap not seeming insurmountable by the well-experienced Smashers, the final was a nail-biter through and through, literally coming down to the last few balls. When the dust had settled, the Smashers had only beaten their mild-mannered opponents by 129 pins, securing victory for the unlikeliest of champions.

Many thanks go out to all those that helped, including The Ramores, Los Furios, and Blacked Out for playing at the Lanes, as well as Impeders of Progress, FatTooth, The Banned, and The Jolts, for givng the night a great Punk Rock sendoff at the Cobalt.

Check out the Punk Bowlers Ball website for more info on next year’s tournament.

CIVLCast 16 // Interview w/ The Brains

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

For the the past seven years, Montreal’s psychobilly horror-punk outfit THE BRAINS, have been terrorizing unsuspecting audiences worldwide with their dastardly and morbid mix of 50’s rock n’ roll, country and old school punk rock. Fronted by undead latin lotherio slash axeman Rene d la Muerte, The Brains round out their unholy posse with beer-chugging, standup bass-slappin Johnny Montreal and the gravedigging, drum-pounding rhythm stylings of Franck O’ Brains. (From The Brains profile on the Stomp Records website.)

Amos Evans of Psycho Radio sat down with Rene and Johnny recently to talk about the state of the Canadian psychobilly scene and their future plans.

From his origins as a busker on the streets of Berlin to Mad Sin’s status as one of the most respected and best selling bands in the genre, Koefte has lead every step of the 20-year plus journey. Psycho Radio host Amos Evans was lucky enough to get a phone interview with the legendary Teutonic madman on May 11th. CIVLCAST 10 // PyschoRadio w/ Paul Roman

Friday, March 6th, 2009

This week Psycho Radio presents an interview with the legendary Paul Roman of The Quakes. The Quakes started out in Buffalo, New York in 1986. They then traveled to England and became part of the historic Klub Foot scene, the only American band to do so. Paul has continued through many adversities to keep bringing psychobilly music to the masses. If not for the influence of The Quakes, the modern psychobilly scene in North America would look very different.

Psycho Radio is very proud to offer this interview, and would like to thank Paul Roman for making time for this interview.

It’s the 9th edition of our CIVLCast programming:
